Senator Mark Spreitzer Praises 2025 State of the State Address from Governor Tony Evers
MADISON – This evening, Governor Tony Evers delivered his seventh State of the State Address before the Wisconsin State Legislature. State Senator Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) released the following statement after the Governor’s address:
“Tonight, Governor Evers continued to demonstrate the strong leadership that Wisconsin has come to rely on. We have a prime opportunity to invest in Wisconsin this legislative session, and the Governor laid out shared priorities that every Wisconsinite can get behind.
“From enacting fair maps to investing in Wisconsin workers, from providing additional funding for local governments to cutting taxes for the middle class – our state has moved forward thanks to bipartisan compromise and hard work. I look forward to working with the Governor and other legislators to continue that important work this session.
“With a state surplus that reaches into the billions of dollars, the Governor highlighted some of the ways that we can take action now to address the issues burdening Wisconsin families. The Governor’s call to make 2025 the Year of the Kid was supported by proposals to improve outcomes for students through investments in clean drinking water in schools, comprehensive mental health services, and free breakfast and lunch for every student in the state. Improving outcomes for kids also means ensuring that parents are able to make ends meet, and the Governor also announced that his upcoming budget will include initiatives to help Wisconsin families by lowering the cost of prescriptions and reducing the cost of child care.
“Governor Evers also discussed the important steps we can take to enact common-sense gun safety laws in Wisconsin. For too long, proposals that will save lives have been ignored in Madison. That needs to change. Policies to invest in services for crime victims, prevent domestic abusers from possessing firearms, and promote safe firearm storage are not new – but it is clear that action is needed. As the Governor said this evening, the Legislature must do its part to promote gun safety and address violence by sending these overwhelmingly popular proposals to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
“Legislative Democrats and Governor Evers are ready to get to work to address the needs of Wisconsinites across the state. As we begin this new legislative session, I hope that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle take this opportunity to work hard, to work together, and to deliver for our state.”
