Skylar Forbes Nets Career-High 25 Points as Marquette Beats Stonehill Saturday

MILWAUKEE  The Marquette University women’s basketball team closed out non-conference play with a win over Stonehill Saturday afternoon, 87-42.

The Golden Eagles (8-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) were led by Skylar Forbes, who had a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Halle Vice (15 points) and Lee Volker (10 points) joined Forbes in double-figures.

Through the first quarter, powered by sophomore forward Skylar Forbes’s seven points, the Golden Eagles shot 66.7% from the field, taking a 14-point lead over the Skyhawks.

In the second quarter, Marquette’s defense came alive, notching 11 rebounds, seven steals and forcing eight turnovers from Stonehill. The Golden Eagles held the Skyhawks to six points, the lowest opposing point total in the second quarter this season.

During the third quarter, Marquette continued pressure on the defensive end, notching 11 rebounds and five points off Stonehill turnovers. The Golden Eagles took their then largest lead of the game, going into the final frame up 64-32.

Marquette shot 56.3% in the fourth quarter, pushing another 23 points, lifting them to a 45-point victory, 87-42.

Stonehill (4-8, 0-0 NEC) was led by senior guard Sharn Hayward , posting 11 points and three assists.

NOTABLES:

  • Saturday was the first meeting between the two teams.
  • Marquette led by 52 points in the fourth quarter, the largest lead this season against an NCAA Division I opponent.
  • Golden Eagles shot a season-high 54.0 percent from the floor.
  • MU held a 26-point advantage at halftime, the largest lead through 20 minutes this season.
  • Marquette tied the lowest points allowed through the first half on the season at 16.
  • The Golden Eagles are 4-0 wearing gold.
  • Three Marquette players had 10+ points including Skylar Forbes (25 points), Halle Vice (15 points) and Lee Volker (10 points).
  • Eighth time since 2005-06 season MU has gone undefeated at home in non-conference play.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will travel to DePaul to open Big East play on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. CT.
