WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. Climate Alliance – a bipartisan coalition of governors representing nearly 60 percent of the U.S. economy and 55 percent of the U.S. population – today pledged to work to collectively reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 61 to 66 percent below 2005 levels by 2035.

The Alliance also applauded the new 2035 U.S. climate target – known as the nationally determined contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement – set today by the Biden-Harris administration. The Alliance’s new collective commitment builds on the coalition’s existing 2025 and 2030 emissions-reduction goals and will help sustain and drive efforts to achieve net-zero emissions as soon as practicable, and no later than 2050.

Executive Director Kerry Schumann had this to say on the announcement:

“This is great news for Wisconsin and the nation. As part of the alliance Gov. Tony Evers has shown time and time again that we are committed to fighting for a clean energy future. He has proven his commitment to a cleaner, brighter future for everyone in Wisconsin.

Since taking office, Gov. Evers has laid out his plans to move Wisconsin to carbon neutrality and has successfully used the Inflation Reduction Act to make progress toward that goal. Gov. Evers has a leading role in the U.S. Climate Alliance, has a clean energy plan for the state, and formed an office of environmental justice to better realize his vision for a cleaner future that doesn’t leave anyone behind.

This fight will now depend on states working together in the face of a pro-polluter federal government focused on getting more coal and gas plants online. We will work to support Gov. Evers in his climate leadership roles here in Wisconsin and at the national level.”
