MILWAUKEE – Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman issued the following statement today on the recent passing of Alderperson Jonathan Brostoff:

“I am completely heartbroken over the recent loss of my friend and colleague, Milwaukee Alderman Jonathan Brostoff. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jonathan and his family for many years, and I consider him a friend, colleague, and partner. My heart goes out to his wife, Diana, his parents Phyllis and Alan, and his children. My thoughts and sympathy are with his family and friends.

“Jonathan cared deeply about our community and his constituents. His unwavering commitment to social justice, community engagement, and public service was an inspiration to all who knew him.

“Suicide is a heartbreaking tragedy that affects us all deeply. If you’re going through a difficult time, please remember to reach out—no one should face their struggles alone. There are always options, and leaning on loved ones and friends can make a difference. As we mourn Jonathan’s loss, we must also address the urgent need to reevaluate firearm access. I believe extending the waiting period could help prevent firearms from being impulsively purchased and used in times of crisis. Wisconsin must carefully examine the strong connection between guns and suicide and take steps to address it.”

“May Jonathan find eternal peace, and may his memory be a blessing and a source of strength for us all.”

For anyone seeking support, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by dialing 988. Additionally, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), and the Crisis Text Line is accessible by texting HELLO to 741741. Milwaukee County’s Behavioral Health Division offers immediate support through its 24-Hour Crisis Line at (414) 257-7222.
