Libertarian Party of Wisconsin Calls For ‘Defend the Guard’ Legislation

By - Sep 27th, 2024 10:32 am

The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin (LPWI) calls on the leadership of the Wisconsin Legislature to pass a version of the “Defend the Guard” legislation. This legislation will nullify the overreach of the federal government in regards to National Guard troops being deployed overseas, keeping them home and available for their main duty of defending the citizens of Wisconsin. Absent a formal declaration of war under the Constitution, the authority to activate National Guard personnel belongs in the hands of the governor.

“The ‘Defend the Guard’ legislation is a critical step in restoring the constitutional balance of power. It ensures that our National Guard members are not sent into conflict zones unless Congress formally declares war, as the Constitution demands. For too long, our military personnel have been drawn into endless wars without proper oversight. This bill would protect our troops, respects the rule of law, and reinforces the idea that military action must always be a last resort — not a tool of unchecked executive power. The Wisconsin Legislature should pass Defend the Guard Legislation ASAP given the current state of the world.” – Brian Bell LPWI Treasurer

The Wisconsin National Guard troops that are currently deployed overseas have been illegally conscripted by the federal government, leaving Wisconsin residents without the Guard resources that are critical in the event of a large scale event. Wisconsin is prone to widespread natural disasters and an insufficient amount of troops and equipment places Wisconsin residents in greater danger.
