MATC Reveals Art Produced by Local Artists as part of Community Arts Collection

MILWAUKEE (August 27, 2024) – Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) will reveal the latest additions to its Community Art Collection, which includes original artwork specifically created for display at MATC locations.

On Wednesday, August 28, at 2 p.m., MATC President Dr. Anthony Cruz will join four of the 16 artists for a reception and presentation at the MATC Education Center at Walker’s Square.

The Community Art Collection, which is now in its fourth year, encourages local artists, most of whom are MATC students and alumni, to celebrate and recognize our shared history and diversity by displaying their art.

This is another example of MATC’s efforts to break down barriers that stand between students and their academic and career success by providing a safe place where differences are valued and celebrated.

The collection is a competitive process that began with a request for proposals in November 2023, with submissions due in July. The college’s community art selection committee reviews all submissions and selects the finalists. This year, 57 artists submitted proposals and 15 artists’ works were selected.

Here are the artists attending the reception, where their art is on display and a summary explaining their work:

Clarissa Friday  – At Walker’s Square – Photographs feature individuals from Native American tribes across Wisconsin in their dance style regalia positioned in modern-day environments.

Yuliia Shevtsova – At Walker’s Square – To acknowledge and celebrate our differences in tenacious unity, a collage of 12 tiles collectively depict a holistic picture. Each tile showcases traditional patterns from various corners of the world.

Rozalia Hernandez Singh – At Walker’s Square – A large, 6-by-10-foot mural features vibrant, diverse colors that capture the vigorous existence of her subject. Steeped in symbols, the two heads intertwine to become one. A blend of cultures flowing in vibrant color, with strong features, demonstrating strength and pride.

Cierra Pleshette – At MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus – A series of portraits highlighting the elderly community with dignity and presence. The photos were taken in residents’ homes, where their stories could be best captured.
