MATC and Community Organizations Present Town Hall to Express the Importance of Black Men Voting

On Tuesday, August 27, 6:00 p.m. the public is invited to “Real Men Vote: Rallying Black Men Around The Importance of Voting,” a town hall discussion on the significance of voting and how collective action builds potential influence.

The town hall is moderated by Dr. Wes Bellamy, Executive Director of John Mercer Langston Institute for African American Political Leadership and Department Chair at Virginia State University. Dr. Bellamy is the author of “When White Supremacy Knocks Fight Back: How White People Can Use Their Privilege and How Black People Can Use Their Power.”

The event panelists include: Chief Judge Carl Ashley, First Judicial District; Walter Lanier, President & CEO of Great Lakes Urban Empowerment Center (GLUE); Nate Deans, Director of Black & Latino Male Achievement; Rayhainio “Ray Nitti” Boynes, Community Activist; Brandon Williford, community activist, and Craig Robinson, MATC student and member of the college’s Men of Color Initiative.

The event will be held at MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus, 700 W. State Street, Main Building, RoomM605. Sponsors include: MATC, Greater Milwaukee Urban League Guild and Greater Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals, City of Milwaukee Election Commission, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and GLUE.

MATC’s Men of Color Initiative provides men from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds the tools and support needed for their overall success as an MATC student. The department also collaborates with MATC’s student support services and community partners to develop initiatives that increase retention and graduation for men of color.
