2nd Vice Chair Coggs-Jones Issues Statement on Recent Tragedy in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE –  2nd Vice Chair Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones expressed her sadness and outrage over the tragic shooting of “Jehovah” Samuel Sharpe Jr. by an Ohio officer outside King Park yesterday, issuing the following statement:

“There is a disproportionate targeting of, and violence faced by people of color, particularly Black men and individuals from low-income communities, at the hands of law enforcement. This issue has been a significant topic of discussion resulting in activism in communities across the United States. When I was elected in 2021, I put forth legislation calling on Milwaukee County to support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, an initiative geared toward preventing tragedies like the death of Samuel Sharpe Jr. yesterday at King Park. Each one of us has the right to be treated humanely. We need reforms to address systemic issues within law enforcement and promote greater accountability and justice. We need to provide mental health training for officers, and better invest in community resources to support those in need,” said 2nd Vice Chair Coggs-Jones. “I am calling for a full and transparent investigation into this incident to ensure justice is served. We extend our condolences to the victims’ family and pledge to work tirelessly towards significant and lasting reforms.”
