Starting Today, Milwaukee County Landmarks will be Lit Green in Support of “Operation Green Light for Veterans”

MILWAUKEE – Starting today, signature landmarks across Milwaukee County, including the U.S. Bank Center, MGIC, the Hyatt Regency, the Mitchell Park Domes, the MKE sign at Mitchell International Airport, the Hoan Bridge and other notable landmarks, will be illuminated green as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort by counties, in which Milwaukee County is joining the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers to support veterans and their families.

From November 6-12, buildings and landmarks in Milwaukee County will be illuminated green to show support for veterans and raise awareness around the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

“Milwaukee County is the proud home to over 42,000 veterans. They are our neighbors, our friends, our families, and our loved ones, and we must do everything we can to support them,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “As Veterans Day is approaching, it’s important to honor and remember every person who has served for our country. Participating in Operation Green Light for Veterans recognizes the sacrifices of the American heroes who fulfilled their obligations and bravely placed their lives on the line for our freedoms.”

Now in its second year, Operation Green Light is expected to draw hundreds of counties to participate. The county role in administering services for veterans includes County Veterans Service Officers helping fellow former service members access more than $52 billion in federal health, disability and compensation benefits each year, as well as other services supporting the approximately 200,000 service members who transition into civilian communities annually. In addition to lighting up County buildings, bridges, and other meaningful landmarks, residents, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their home to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. By shining a green light, residents and businesses are letting local veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
