Supervisor Peter Burgelis Criticizes Greenfield Mayor’s Decision to Cancel Health Department’s Pride Booth at Farmers Market

MILWAUKEE — On Tuesday, June 20th, TMJ4 reported that Greenfield Mayor Mike Neitzke had cancelled the LGBTQ+ Pride celebration previously scheduled to take place at the Greenfield Farmers Market on June 25th. Mayor Neitzke referred to the recent violent assault on County Supervisor Peter Burgelis as partial justification for the cancellation.

In response to this decision by Mayor Neitzke, Supervisor Burgelis issued the following statement:

“LGBTQ+ acceptance and equality aren’t a political sportsball that municipal leaders should toss or pass. The Mayor’s action to cancel the LGBTQ+ Pride tent at the Greenfield Farmers Market is not motivated by a threat to protect his residents, but rather another divisive action that further divides our communities. This unilateral action to cancel is an insult to the LGBTQ+ community and a disservice to the public at large.  Whether the mayor un-cancels or not, I’m confident that there will be many more rainbows at the farmers market this Sunday than he expected. I’ll be there for strawberries!”

The LGBTQ+ Pride celebration at the Greenfield Farmers Market was intended to be a joyful and inclusive gathering, celebrating diversity and promoting unity within the community. Supervisor Burgelis recognizes the significance of such events in fostering understanding and acceptance, and he stands firmly against any decision that undermines these values.

Supervisor Burgelis joins other LGBTQ+ community members and calls upon Mayor Neitzke to reconsider his decision and reinstate the Pride celebration at the Greenfield Farmer’s Market, acknowledging that the cancellation only serves to create further division and hinder progress in building an inclusive and accepting society.
