Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

Every year on November 20th we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance across the country to honor the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. As we approach this day, I am left to reflect on how 2022 has been particularly tough for our transgender community in Milwaukee, as we have lost both Regina Allen and Brazil Johnson, two Black transgender women, in shocking and unfortunate acts of violence. My thoughts and well-wishes will be with both of their families on this day of remembrance.

These incidents underscore that we must continue to do more for our transgender community.

As an Alderwoman I will continue to use my platform to advocate for greater rights and protections for transgender people across our city and state, and I urge all advocates, community members, and transgender allies everywhere to join me in this push against anti-trans rhetoric and legislation.

There are other ways to support the transgender community on this day as well, such as taking a moment to learn proper pronoun usage, or listening to stories of those impacted by anti-transgender violence. These seemingly small steps can go a long way toward making our shared community a more inclusive place for everyone.
