Marquette Presents: What you need to know about Ebola
Is Milwaukee prepared to handle an Ebola case?
MILWAUKEE – Is Milwaukee prepared to handle an Ebola case? How likely is spread of the disease to Milwaukee, and more importantly, how can we stop Ebola?
Scientists and researchers from the College of Health Sciences and the City of Milwaukee Health Department will address these questions and more at the upcoming Marquette Presents forum: “What you need to know about Ebola.” The free forum is Monday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 a.m. in the third-floor ballroom of the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee.
“This is an important and timely subject,” said Dr. William E. Cullinan, dean of the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University and director of the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center. “The public is concerned, especially with the recent cases of Ebola in the U.S. People want to understand the risks and how the city would handle any potential cases of the disease.”
Cullinan will moderate the forum. Presenters include:
- Dr. Lauriann Klockow, clinical assistant professor of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Health Sciences at Marquette. Klockow is an expert in molecular virology and infectious disease.
- Paul Biedrzycki, director of disease control and environmental health for the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Biedrzycki, a 25-year employee of the Milwaukee Health Department, has been active in the planning and response to a number of emerging infectious disease events in Milwaukee, including the 1993 Cryptosporidium outbreak, the 2003 Monkeypox outbreak and the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.
Marquette Presents is a forum series developed by the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University to focus on issues of community health. Previous forums in the series focused on depression, sports-related concussion, addiction, schizophrenia and spinal cord injury.
The forum is free and open to the public, and it includes a complimentary continental breakfast. Free parking is also available in the 16th Street parking structure, located between Wisconsin Ave. and Wells Street. Registration is required and available online.
