Ald. Zamarripa introduces resolution supporting women’s reproductive freedom
Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa has introduced legislation would place the City of Milwaukee in support of women’s reproductive rights. File #220273 directs the Department of Administration – Intergovernmental Relations Division to lobby for repeal of s. 940.04, Wis. Stats., which bans abortion. The file is co-sponsored by Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderman Robert J. Bauman, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton and Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers earlier this month signed an executive order requiring the state Legislature to meet in special session on June 22 with the intent of overturning the 1849 state law. If the United States Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 173-year-old state law that would take effect would criminalize doctors for providing abortion services.“Roe v. Wade being overturned by the Supreme Court would have a dramatic impact in Wisconsin and in particular a damaging effect in Milwaukee. Communities of color, low-income communities, people who are disabled, immigrants, young people, and members of the LGBTQ+ community will be among the most disproportionately affected populations,” said Alderwoman Zamarripa. “At its core abortion care is health care, and it would not be in the best interest of the women and families in our community to have such an archaic law take precedent in Wisconsin.”
The file will be heard at a future meeting of the Common Council’s Steering and Rules Committee.
