Milwaukee, (June 1, 2022) – The 17th annual Character Education Conference will take place at Alverno College on June 16 with an option for virtual participation. The theme is Rebounding with Character, and the focus will be on the important role that character education and social emotional learning play in improving school culture and academic achievement.

The opening keynote will be given by Dr. Michele Borba. Her research found that the difference between those who struggle and those who succeed comes down to seven teachable character strengths, and she offers practical, actionable, evidence-based ways to develop these character strengths. An educational psychologist, best-selling author and regular TODAY show contributor, Borba has spoken to over a million participants on five continents about child development issues, and is recognized globally for her work in bullying and youth violence prevention.

Andy Vitrano, who served in education for over 20 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, will give the luncheon keynote. He will explore different forms of stress and how your body and mind responds to them, teaching attendees how to recognize stressful situations and apply six supportive practices during stressful situations.

The Character Education Conference will include breakout sessions led by national and local experts in the field. Topics will include building equity, interpersonal staff relations, healing anxiety and stress, and improving school climate. School administrators, counselors, K-12 teachers, pupil services professionals, coaches, school board members, parents and community leaders are encouraged to register. The conference is sponsored by the School District of South Milwaukee in partnership with Alverno College and the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership (WCEP).
