Senator Agard and Representative Shelton Introduce Bike Legislation

MADISON- Today, Senator Melissa Agard (D-Madison) and Representative Kristina Shelton (D-Green Bay) released LRB-5204 and LRB 5241, bills aimed at making Wisconsin more bike and pedestrian friendly. LRB-5204 allows a local unit of government to use the power of condemnation for the purposes of establishing trails, bike lanes, or pedestrian ways. LRB 5241 makes Wisconsin a stop state for pedestrians, bicyclists, and others who are in a pedestrian walkway.

Senator Agard and Representative Shelton released the following statements:

Senator Agard

“Wisconsin should be a place where young people want to stay, plant their roots, raise a family, and spend their hard earned dollars. In order to do this, we must invest in multi-modal transportation – including bike and pedestrian trails. It is imperative that we make the necessary changes now so our communities are a place where people want to be.

“LRB 5204 is a needed change to establish local control for our towns, villages, cities and counties to do what is best for them; LRB 5241 will keep pedestrians, cyclists, and others safe on our roads and crosswalks. I look forward to seeing this legislation continue to move on through the process.”

Representative Shelton
“Common sense legislation like this is critical to ensuring safe, equitable access to roads, walkways, and trails for all. Healthy and active communities must have the necessary tools to promote and expand tourism, recreation, and transportation while at the same time, prioritizing public safety. Safer streets and areas to bike and walk encourages healthier lifestyles, increases a sense of overall well-being, and reduces our carbon footprint, having a direct positive impact on our environment. Let’s invest in the things we share – join us and ask your state elected officials to support LRB 5204 and 5241.”
