Our residents, children deserve safer shared spaces

In recent weeks, I have continued to be notified that reckless drivers are intentionally intimidating other motorists and pedestrians by driving directly towards them and then darting away at the last possible moment. This includes a recent complaint of a reckless driver barreling toward a senior citizen walking with a child.
This is a deadly game that could end with deadly consequences, and this behavior is flat out unacceptable.
Our community has faced far too much death and destruction of late, including the tragic news over the weekend that two young girls were shot, including one fatally.
No person, especially no child, should have to fear being shot by someone who decides to randomly pull a trigger, or being run over by a person playing a senseless game with a two-thousand pound object.
If you’re attacking children, then you’re attacking our future, and as a community we can’t allow that.
To those who have found it acceptable to gamble with the lives of others while behind the wheel, you need to reconsider your actions. You will end up regretting your decisions later if you harm, or even worse kill, someone for no reason at all.
I also want to assure the community that the Milwaukee Police Department is aware of this new strain of the reckless driving pandemic, and will be vigilant in combatting it. Police cannot do this alone, and so moving forward we need to continue working to design streets that impede reckless driving behavior and to make them safer for motorists and pedestrians overall.
