MIAD fall gallery exhibitions & events announced
MILWAUKEE (August 10, 2021) – The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) announces four new gallery exhibitions this fall in MIAD’s Frederick Layton Gallery and Brooks Stevens Gallery. The gallery exhibitions address global challenges and community, and feature Milwaukee area artists and worldwide collaborations of artists and artist collectives. MIAD’s Galleries at 273 E. Erie St., Milwaukee, are open to the public Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free.
The college also anticipates the return of the MIAD Creativity Series and MIAD Holiday Sale later this fall.

2021 Mary L. Nohl Suitcase Exhibition Aug. 9 – Sept. 25, 2021, Frederick Layton Gallery
This biennial exhibition at MIAD showcases Milwaukee area emerging and established visual artists who have received the Mary L. Nohl Suitcase Travel Award in the preceding two years. The exhibition features the diversity and depth of local talent who are creating new work. The latest awardees represent the first wave of travelers since the COVID-19 pandemic began. An Artist’s Reception is Sept. 9, 6 – 8 p.m.
Somewhere Along the Line: Photographs by Joshua Dudley Greer Aug. 9 – Sept. 18, 2021,
Brooks Stevens Gallery
For six years, Joshua Dudley Greer traveled over 100,000 miles by car, focusing his camera on the massive network of superhighways in the United States. Greer, who is based in Atlanta, has had work highlighted in the Washington Post, Wired magazine and The Atlantic, among other publications.
In this exhibition, Greer examines the real or imagined boundaries that line U.S. roadways and looks at the separations between public and private space, privilege and need, the individual and the collective, and the ideas of home and escape. The photographs depict the state of America’s infrastructure as a physical manifestation of its economic, social and environmental circumstances in unforeseen moments of humor, pathos and humanity.
Constant Practice: New Work from MIAD Faculty Oct. 5 – Dec. 4, 2021, Brooks Stevens Gallery
MIAD faculty are accomplished, practicing artists and designers in communication design, fine arts, illustration, interior architecture and design and product design. In this biennial exhibition, MIAD faculty showcase their ongoing explorations in their fields.
Special events include an Artist’s Reception, Oct. 7, 6 – 8 p.m. and special hours during Gallery Night MKE, Oct. 15, 5 – 9 p.m. and Oct. 16, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Reimagining the Global Village Oct. 11 – Dec. 4, 2021, Frederick Layton Gallery
This exhibition, generously sponsored by Fiserv and curated by MIAD alum Nirmal Raja ‘08 (Painting), features work by more than 30 artists and collectives, created collaboratively between artists and between artists and communities in more than 18 different countries. Their work reveals the importance of human connection and showcases strategies artists have adopted to create a more connected and caring world.
The work addresses issues currently weighing down on the global community: refugees at borders, ruptures in cross-cultural communication and climate change. These issues are of great magnitude, often too intimidating for any one person, community or country to address. This exhibition provides tools to break away from isolationist thinking, acknowledging artists as points of connection and the work they produce through collaboration as bridges.
Special events include an Artist’s Reception, Oct. 14, 6 – 8 p.m. and special hours during Gallery Night MKE, Oct. 15, 5 – 9 p.m. and Oct. 16, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The MIAD Creativity Series brings internationally renowned creatives to Milwaukee to engage the community in new ways of thinking about, and appreciating, the arts and the world of design. More details to be announced soon.
MIAD Holiday Sale, Dec. 2 – 4, 2021
This annual sale of MIAD student and alumni work features one-of-a-kind gifts such as jewelry, stickers, sculptures, paintings, prints, furniture and more. Proceeds benefit the participating student artists and designers, as well as MIAD student scholarships.
