Gov. Evers Vetoes Assembly Bill 173

By - Jun 30th, 2021 04:03 pm

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today vetoed Assembly Bill 173, one bill among several passed by Republicans in the Legislature that would affect election administration in Wisconsin. The legislation comes as Republican-controlled Legislatures are taking up similar or related measures in states across the country. One week ago, the governor called to receive these bills, among others, without delay, including Assembly Bill 173 and Senate Bills 203, 204, 205, 210, 212, and 292. Despite that request, the Legislature has declined to present the remainder of the requested bills to the governor.

Assembly Bill 173 prohibits accepting private grants or donations for election administration and prohibits state agencies, counties, and municipalities from entering into a contract related to election administration that includes any requirement governing election administration or the transfer of any duty related to election administration to a person who does not have that duty under state law.

The veto message for Assembly Bill 173 is available here.
