Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee To Provide Free Summer Meals For Youth

MILWAUKEE – Stressing the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee (BGCGM) announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program. 

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well. 

Breakfast, lunch, and/or afternoon snacks will be provided to Boys & Girls Clubs members Monday through Friday at the following locations:

“Providing access to basic needs like nutritious meals is crucial to supporting young people,” said Kathy Thornton-Bias, BGCGM President & CEO. “Helping parents meet the nutritional needs of their children is the strength of this program.” 

BGCGM is also pleased to sponsor SFSP at Camp Whitcomb/Mason in Hartland, WI. Meals will be available at no separate charge to enrolled children who are 18 years of age and under and to persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and are also participating in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year. 

The amount of reimbursement received by a Summer Food Service Program sponsor is based upon the household incomes of the enrolled children. Children who are members of households receiving Foodshare,  FDPIR, W-2 (Wisconsin Works – Cash Benefits Only) benefits are automatically eligible to receive free meal benefits at eligible program sites.
