Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs will be the recipient of the first-ever Dr. James G. White Human Service Award at the inaugural Harambee Community Banquet, which is being hosted by WestCare Wisconsin’s Harambee Community Involvement Center on Saturday, July 12 at 5:30 p.m.

The event is being held in memory of Dr. White, who passed away on August 28, 2013. Dr. White served as regional vice president of WestCare Wisconsin, and was elected three times to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. A tireless advocate for those struggling with urban poverty, he was a role model to Alderwoman Coggs, as well as her Godfather.

“I’m honored and humbled to accept this recognition,” Alderwoman Coggs said. “In the spirit of Dr. White and Harambee, I am proud to be a part of a community that pulls together to meet problems head-on. It’s a community that has helped shape the person I am today, and I look forward to celebrating that spirit at the banquet.”

The banquet is being held at the HeartLove Place Ballroom, 3229 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. State Sen. Lena Taylor will act as the mistress of ceremonies, and the keynote speaker will be the Honorable Secretary Eloise Anderson of the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, who, prior to joining the administration, had spent her career serving in social services right in the heart of the Harambee community.
