Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block historic site | Curator’s Virtual Tour

February 3, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block

Virtual visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block homes with Curator Mike Lilek. This virtual visit, lecture, and live Q&A will explore Wright’s earliest examples of affordable, small scale dwellings.

“You Can Own an American Home,” promised a 1917 ad for Frank Lloyd Wright’s new American System-Built Houses. The lecture will explore Wright’s broad vision to shelter all Americans in a beautiful home of his design – with emphasis on the American System-Built Homes in Milwaukee. Wright would say, “I believe this effort is the logical conclusion of my studies and my architectural practice…”

The home at 2714 W. Burnham St. is a Model B1 of the American System-Built homes. It has been meticulously restored to its 1916 appearance.  This tiny 805 square foot home brings together nearly all of Wright’s design principles from his earlier Prairie period. Nature is an extension of the interior spaces, light fills the home, privacy and serenity are primary.  The modest homes speak to our contemporary sensitivities of efficiency and economy. They challenge us to re-think how we build shelter and how we connect occupants to nature and the outdoors. Reflecting on the American System-Built Homes, one scholar called them a “…life-enhancing work of art.” We couldn’t agree more!

This event will feature a virtual tour video and will end with a live Q&A.

Tickets are $10 and are available here.

This will be a virtual event hosted on the Zoom platform.

You will be sent the event URL by email after you purchase your ticket.
