Urban Milwaukee Wins Press Club Honors

The nation's oldest press club honors Urban Milwaukee for the second year in a row.

Bruce Murphy For the second year in a row, Urban Milwaukee was recognized by the Milwaukee Press Club’s annual, state-wide journalism awards. Editor Bruce Murphy won the Silver Award in the “Best Column” category for his Murphy’s Law column, “The Legacy of Betty Quadracci.”

Murphy also won the Gold Award for “Best Single Editorial” for his column, “Less Power to People,” for Isthmus.  A similar version of this column also ran in Urban Milwaukee.

In last year’s contest, honoring work done in 2012, Urban Milwaukee won the Bronze Award for “Best local news or feature website” and Murphy again won two awards: the Silver Award for “Best Single Editorial” and the Bronze Award for “Best Blog.”

Two organizations that partner with Urban Milwaukee also won awards honoring work done in 2013: The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism won gold awards for “Best public service story and “Best multi-story coverage of a single feature topic or event,” gold and silver awards for “Best background, analytical or interpretive story” and the bronze award for “Best Investigative Story or Series.” The group also won awards for audio and multi-media work. And Neighborhood News Service won the silver award for “Best local news or feature website.” Urban Milwaukee publishes some stories by both organizations.

The Milwaukee Press Club, founded in 1885, is the oldest such organization in the nation.

Its annual dinner and ceremony, held Friday night, gave the annual Sacred Cat Award to journalist Jonathan Alter and Headliner Awards to Michael Pink, artistic director of the Milwaukee Ballet, and Stephen Roell, the former CEO of Johnson Controls. Journal Sentinel reporter Bill Glauber offered this account of Alter’s speech.
