Supervisor Taylor Not Schocked That Taxpayers Were Deceived About Additional Costs of Recently Approved Living Wage Ordinance

Supervisor Steve F. Taylor today expressed his extreme dissatisfaction with and voted against a resolution that provides funding for three staff positions at the Milwaukee County Comptroller‘s Office to ensure compliance with enforcement duties relative to the living wage ordinance recently adopted by the Milwaukee County Board. The Board voted 14 – 4 to create these three positions, adding on to the already high cost the living wage ordinance forces on Milwaukee County taxpayers.
“It continues to amaze me how this Board chooses to waste tax dollars anytime they get a chance, yet when they can actually save money they reject it outright. The so called Living Wage Ordinance that the taxpayers were told wouldn’t cost them anything already caused a projected million dollar deficit in 2014 and looks like it will now cost them additional $218,000.00 annually,” said Supervisor Taylor.
The living wage ordinance survived the veto from the Milwaukee County Executive at the March meeting of the Milwaukee County Board.
“The taxpayers survived a nearly $2 million hit over three years last month when bringing the custodial contract in-house failed, however, the Finance Committee rejected a custodial contract with Clean Power which would have resulted in $2 million savings over three years. The County is struggling to pay its bills just like many of our residents but unlike our residents who have learned to tighten their belts, the County continues to rack up debt with poor decisions,” Taylor said.
