Milwaukee Police Department launches the “ReWaukee Project”
On August 12, 2020, the Milwaukee Police Department announced the launch of the “ReWaukee Project.” The ReWaukee Project is a new initiative led by the Milwaukee Police Department in partnership with the community and local officials to improve police –community relations. It will focus on fostering community engagement and incorporating collaborative input and partnership. The slogan for the ReWaukee Project is “Reform. Reimagine. Rebuild.”
The first initiative under the ReWaukee Project is hosting numerous “speak out” sessions where all members of the community are invited to discuss the various issues involving police-community issues in a virtual format. Each group will be limited to under a dozen participants, be facilitated through a Milwaukee nonprofit and be documented by a professional consultant. The consultant will produce the results in a report that will be released publicly.
All members of the community, regardless of their view of law enforcement, are encouraged to sign up for a “speak out” session to discuss their concerns, ideas and perspectives. MPD encourages participation from all sectors of Milwaukee, including residents, community groups, faith-based organizations and the business community. The sessions are projected to begin in early September. Milwaukeeans can enroll by emailing: TalkToMPD@milwaukee.gov.
The logo for the ReWaukee Project features the Sankofa bird, an African proverb for moving forward while looking backwards.
