Parking meter enforcement grace period and issuance of warnings will end
Meter enforcement, smart meter parking rate change take effect Tuesday June 23, 2020
Two years ago, the City of Milwaukee embarked on a comprehensive strategy to replace aging coin fed meters with smart meter infrastructure to enhance customer service and increase efficiency for theCity’s workforce. Smart meters allow customers to pay via coins, credit cards, or the highly recommended contactless MKE Park app. As part of this initiative the Common Council adopted a
rate change that would take effect following significant installation of a smart meter network. This adoption will result in the first rate change in Milwaukee in more than a decade.
Since then, the City has invested over $3 million in smart meter installation, currently throughout the central business district and Historic Third Ward, and is in the process of completing other areas. As part of this investment, beginning Tuesday, June 23, 2020, the Department of Public Works will implement the following hourly rates with existing smart meters:
- Smart meters that are $1.50 will be $2.00
- Smart meters that are $1.00 will be $1.25
- Smart meters that are $.50 will be $.75
This change will align with the end of the metered parking enforcement grace period. Since resuming timed meter parking regulations on June 10, 2020, reenactment notices with no fines have
been placed on offending vehicles rather than citations. Beginning Tuesday, Parking Enforcement Officers will be issuing citations for metered violations throughout the City of Milwaukee.
