Supervisor Steve F. Taylor Condemns Passage of Living Wage Ordinance by Finance, Personnel and Audit Committee

Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Steve F. Taylor today condemned a vote by the County Board’s Finance, Personnel and Audit Committee to approve a “living wage” ordinance.

“As I’ve stated in the past, this measure is misguided, unrealistic and the taxpayers of Milwaukee County simply cannot afford it,” said Taylor. “It will drive away development from Milwaukee County and do more harm than good for those that supporters of this measure claim it will help.”

The proposal as amended increases the minimum wage to 100 percent of the Federal Poverty line – currently at $11.33 – for employees of companies doing business with Milwaukee County. The measure advances for consideration by the full County Board on February 6th.

“I certainly hope that the rest of my colleagues will have more foresight and join me in defeating this measure which, if approved by the full Board, will have devastating effect on our local economy,” Taylor said. “This well-intentioned but ill-conceived ordinance will have a disastrous effect on Milwaukee County’s ability to do business.”
