Representative Lisa Subeck Upholds Governor’s Veto

MADISON – Today, Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement regarding the failed override of Governor Evers’s veto of Assembly Bill 76, which would reduce required training for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs):

“Today, I voted to uphold the Governor’s veto of a bill that would reduce training requirements for the Certified Nursing Assistants that provide frontline care to our most vulnerable neighbors and family members. Republicans attempted to override the Governor’s veto under the guise of addressing the caregiver shortage. Like the rest of the country, Wisconsin faces a caregiver shortage that must be addressed, but allowing caregivers with less training to take on these nursing aide roles is not a safe and viable solution.

Rather than cutting training requirements and diminishing quality of care, we should seek to adequately compensate caregivers for their important work and ensure new caregivers have access to the training they need. That is why I introduced the CNA Pay Act again this session, yet Republicans have refused to even hold a public hearing on these bill to increase pay for CNAs and personal caregivers, create a tax credit equal to educational costs for CNAs who receive their training and commit to working in the state, and provide grants to technical colleges for nurse aide training.”
