Suspect in Reckless Driving Fatality Sentenced to 25 Years
He was sentenced to 25 years in the Wisconsin Department of Corrections with 15 years initial confinement and 10 years extended supervision.
Milwaukee, WI (September 25, 2019) On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, Robert Matagi appeared in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Branch 38 for sentencing. Mr. Matagi pled no contest to a Hit and Run Causing Death. He was sentenced to 25 years in the Wisconsin Department of Corrections with 15 years initial confinement and 10 years extended supervision.
On Thursday, April 11, 2019, at 5:08 p.m., a Milwaukee County Deputy Sheriff observed, Mr. Matagi driving a vehicle recklessly, passing traffic in the right distress lane. The Deputy activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Mr. Matagi continued southbound on I-43 at a high rate of speed, recklessly weaving in and out of traffic, he exited southbound I-43 at West Holt Avenue, failed to stop at the stop sign, and continued westbound on West Morgan Avenue at a high rate of speed.
At the intersection of South 13th Street and West Morgan Avenue, Mr. Matagi, proceeded through a red light and crashed into a vehicle traveling southbound on South 13th Street.
The driver of the vehicle traveling southbound on South 13th Street was Pedro L. Colon-Ortiz, age 25, a resident of Milwaukee. Mr. Colon-Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
