Dear District 3,

Allow me to introduce myself as both your neighbor and candidate for District 3 Alderman. My name is Jacob Marek and after relocating to the East Side I have had the opportunity to explore a neighborhood full of art and culture. I have fallen in love with a city that has a rich history of industry entwined with hard work. I have been raised in Wisconsin as long as I can remember and had the opportunity to study Computer Science and Mathematics at Karlova Univerzita in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. There I navigated a medieval city that had undergone massive modernization while preserving its unique culture and architecture in an attempt to both remain relevant to tourism and attractive to business. I learned of many ways a city that wishes to honor the wishes of its longest term residents can develop new opportunity while respecting its past. In my short time here in District 3, I have founded CleanMKE and worked to detrash the community through several volunteer events. With this letter I hope to earn your support for my campaign.

I hope to focus on several problems facing the district. First, we see routine punishment of residents for using the parking available to them. If it’s true that the rules are in place to free up spaces, then residents should be given an opportunity to correct their mistakes through a text notification prior to issuing any sort of ticket. Most importantly, there is a lack of a plan to modernize our road and pedestrian infrastructure. If the city hopes to remain relevant as it grows it needs to develop a new standard road and bike lane plan that takes advantage of what has been learned in 100 plus years of automobile technology. Traffic circles that allow for safe pedestrian crossing and protected bike lanes make the district attractive to visitors and safer for ourselves.

The city also allows our memorable architecture to fall into disrepair and continues to increase property taxes preventing many homeowners from affording maintenance on the masonry and woodwork of over 100 year old homes and apartments. Our residents should not be punished for improving their home due to renovations increasing assessments. Improvements to curb appeal can drive out crime and bring in business which only improves the value of the district. Instead taxes should be assessed based on the services provided by the city, block to block, and the quality of the roads near our homes. Easements should be available to residents who put up external security cameras and lighting so that we can accurately identify criminals and waste less police resources.

It’s time for your alderman to take advantage of 21st century communication methods and tools to show how they are serving you. I would use a timesheet like system to create a paper trail as evidence of work completed. I wish to show that I am both invested in this city and working towards its goals of safety for all, economic opportunity for our families, educational success for our children, and preservation of our environmental and historical assets. Regular “State of the District” videos would be created so residents can track the progress of our goals and aspirations, while providing a forum for direct communication with your alderman.
