Marquette University hiring up to nine faculty members this academic year to bolster Race and Ethnic Studies program

MILWAUKEE – During the 2018-19 academic year, Marquette University is recruiting for up to nine additional faculty members to bolster its Race and Ethnic Studies (RAES) program, which was announced in fall 2017 with a cluster hire of five new faculty.
The Race and Ethnic Studies cluster hire is a collaboration among the Office of the Provost, the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, the Diederich College of Communication and the College of Business Administration. Cluster hiring involves recruiting multiple scholars into one or more departments based on shared, interdisciplinary research interests. Beyond helping to get Marquette’s RAES program up and running, cluster hiring will also help to advance faculty diversity, which is a key priority in the university’s strategic plan, Beyond Boundaries.
“To achieve diversity, equity and inclusive excellence at Marquette University, we must offer diverse of areas of study along with faculty whose backgrounds support it,” said Marquette University Acting Provost Kimo Ah Yun. “We owe it to Marquette students to develop the best possible community of teachers and scholars on this important and complex topic, and these faculty represent this worthy intiative.”
The Race and Ethnic Studies Program is housed in Marquette’s Klingler College of Arts and Science, and supports interdisciplinary majors and minors in a number of fields including Africana Studies (major and minor), LatinX Studies (minor), Arab and Muslim American Studies (minor), Literatures of Diverse Cultures (minor) and Culture, Health and Illness (minor).
Building a critical mass of scholars across disciplines who study and teach about race, ethnicity and intersectionality – the ways in which systems of power and inistutitons impact marginalized populations – serves to help the Marquette community of students and scholars grapple with societal changes.
During the 2017-18 academic year, Marquette recruited five scholars as part of the Race and Ethnic Studies program. Each brings expertise in fields that contribute to the RAES curriculum.
