‘Tis the season of snowball-throwing, gift-giving, and tree-trimming. This holiday season, Milwaukee-area youth groups are decking the halls of the Milwaukee County Zoo with hundreds of handmade animal ornaments. The ornaments will adorn more than 60 evergreen trees, donated by Hawks Landscape, featured in the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s annual Fantastic Forest. This year’s theme, “Take a Tour Around the Zoo,” has children creating ornaments resembling animals from designated areas of the Zoo. Some trees will feature primates, others will have big cats. All 60-plus trees will be inside the U.S. Bank Gathering Place.

Tree decorating will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and Thursday, Nov. 29. After that, everyone is invited to take a stroll through the forest during the month of December and see the hard work and creativity of each child artist.

Who: Milwaukee-area youth groups
What: More than 60 evergreen trees donated Hawks Landscape
When: Tree decorating Nov. 28-29, 4-7 p.m.; Fantastic Forest Dec. 1-28
Where: U.S. Bank Gathering Place, Milwaukee County Zoo

While the trees are decorated with animals, one tree is decorated for the animals. The zookeeper-hosted Giving Tree is decorated with ornaments listing items the animals need. Guests are encouraged to take an ornament from the tree, buy the item and bring it back to the Zoo, or make a monetary donation for the item while visiting.
