Clinic nurses need to be able to provide critically important care, services

The nurses at the Milwaukee Health Department Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Clinic (located in the 7th District at 3200 N. 36th St.) have been providing valuable care and services to the community for many years. It is vitally important for them to be able to perform their full range of procedures and services allowed under the Wisconsin Administrative Code to help clients and to protect the wider community.
Recent concerns raised by MHD Commissioner Dr. Patricia McManus on whether the nurses at the clinic have been working within their legal scope of practice have been addressed by the City Attorney (the City Attorney has stated the nurses are working and performing procedures, etc. within the scope of their licensing and training under the state administrative code). I credit Dr. McManus for looking into the matter to ensure appropriate practice and procedures are being followed.
I now look forward to hearing more about the great work of the STI clinic nurses and staff, and the badly needed services they are providing to help Milwaukee combat its very serious STI/STD problem.
The clinic’s nurses are most effective in battling the problem when they are allowed to fully perform the pertinent procedures and practices allowed under state code, and I urge Dr. McManus to make sure they are allowed to do so.
