Ald. Rainey: Electing a police chief puts the power in community’s hands
"Anyone wanting to be police chief would need to put in the time and effort to meet their electorate, learn about their concerns, and declare which issues they would address."
On Monday (July 2) the Judiciary and Legislation Committee will take up a file that aims to make the Milwaukee Police Chief an elected position. The resolution would direct the Department of Administration – Intergovernmental Relations Division to seek the necessary change in state statute.
The lead sponsor of the resolution (#180365) says the ultimate goal, a change in state law, could lead to a change in policing out neighborhoods.
“Time and time again we’ve seen community relations problems with the Milwaukee Police Department,” said Alderman Khalif J. Rainey. “This seeks to the put the power in the community’s hands while having a police chief who is ultimately beholden to the public.”
Alderman Rainey says campaigning shapes priorities, in a positive way. “Anyone wanting to be police chief would need to put in the time and effort to meet their electorate, learn about their concerns, and declare which issues they would address.”
The Judiciary and Legislation Committee meeting is Monday, July 2 at 9 a.m. in room 301-B at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St. The meeting will be carried live on the City Channel at www.milwaukee.gov/channel25.
