Milwaukee – The Milwaukee County Board Committee on Intergovernmental Relations yesterday approved a set of measures reducing the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors’ pay rate and operating budget, as well as reforming its roles and responsibilities. An amended resolution was approved on a 6-1 vote, with Supervisor Taylor voting in favor of the reforms.
Following the passage of the resolution, Supervisor Taylor issued the following statement:
“I have gone on the record supporting AB85/SB95 even though there are aspects of the legislation that I do not agree with. I have also stated that I would vote for reform at the local level if I had the opportunity to do so because my district overwhelmingly supports it. I am not a member of the Wisconsin State Senate and therefore I have no voting power in that legislative body whatsoever. I cannot cast a vote in Madison but I can in Milwaukee County. When I was campaigning for this position a little over a year ago and someone had told me that this type of reform was possible I would have asked in disbelief ‘what were you smoking?’
“This is a first step in implementing board-developed reform. I certainly hope that this is a genuine effort by the sponsors and I fully expect that they will be coming forth with ordinance changes in near future.
“This reform does not prevent the legislation in Madison from taking place. If the bill in Madison passes, then for the most part what we have done becomes irrelevant. However, if the bill is stalled, then we have put something into place that will make Milwaukee County govern more efficiently.”
The Milwaukee County Board will consider the resolution during its regularly scheduled meeting on April 26, 2013.
