Senator Johnson Put Partisanship Ahead of Wisconsinites as Committee Chairman
For nearly six years Senator Johnson has been at the center of Washington gridlock.

MADISON — Senator Johnson has gone to great lengths to talk about his “accomplishments” as Chairman of the Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. He even claimed that it was the reason he decided to run again. The truth? As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel detailed this morning, Johnson has spent more time obstructing bills than passing them. For nearly six years Senator Johnson has been at the center of Washington gridlock, using his committee chairmanship to push his extreme agenda. This is the sad record he wants to run on?
“Senator Johnson has spent his time as committee chairman prioritizing gridlock, blocking bills that would make America safer, protect taxpayers and reduce the deficit. Time after time he’s used his committee chairmanship to push Mitch McConnell’s agenda instead of Wisconsinites. If this is the record he wants to run on, it’s a record of failure,” said Harry Hartfield, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
He failed to move legislation that would keep Americans safer:
- A bill to address lead-contaminated drinking water such as the crisis in Flint, MI has been stuck in committee since March 2016.
- A bill that would make it easier for states to fight and recover from wildfires has been stuck in committee since August 2015.
He has refused to move measures that would save American taxpayers money:
- A bill that would reduce the size of the federal motor pool has been stuck in committee since February 2015.
- A bill that would repeal the provision of law granting Members of Congress automatic pay increases has been stuck in committee since February 2015.
He has let legislation languish that would protect Americans from cyberattacks:
- A bill that would allow information sharing between private companies to combat cybersecurity threats has been stuck in committee since February 2015.
- A bill that would provide identity theft protection and insurance for victims of the OPM data breach has been stuck in committee since July 2015.
- A bill that would authorize a center to assist state and local governments with cybersecurity protection has been stuck in committee since March 2016.
Senator Johnson has refused to prioritize good government measures:
- A bill that would protect whistleblowers has been stuck in committee since March 2016.
- A bill that would suspend congressional pay during a government shutdown has been stuck in committee since September 2015.
- A bill to require disclosure of political intelligence activities has been stuck in committee since March 2016.
- A bill that would impose severe lobbying restrictions on federal employees and members of congress who begin lobbying has been stuck in committee since August 2015.
- A bill that would maintain conflict-of-interest restrictions on private sector benefits for employees who take jobs in the federal government has been stuck in committee since July 2015.
Senator Johnson has refused to advance measure that would require big corporations to pay their fair share:
- A bill that would prohibit the federal government from awarding contracts to companies benefiting from corporate tax inversions has been stuck in committee since April 2015.
Senator Johnson has refused to let legislation move that would help military reservists:
- A bill that would create a tiered hiring system to assist military reservists to get federal government jobs has been stuck in committee since February 2015.
