ON VIEW ON THE GROUNDS & IN THE HOUSE

Through October 30, 2016
FO WILSON: ELIZA’S PECULIAR CABINET OF CURIOSITIES
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/fo-wilson-elizas-peculiar-cabinet-curiosities

In late June, Chicago-based artist Fo Wilson unveiled Eliza’s Peculiar Cabinet of Curiosities on the grounds of the Lynden Sculpture Garden. The full-scale structure is both wunderkammer and slave cabin; it imagines what a 19th-century woman of African descent might have collected, catalogued and stowed in her living quarters. What did she find curious about the objects and culture of her European captors? Southern plantation life? The natural world around her? Informed by historical research, but represented in the past, present and future simultaneously, Eliza–animated by an Afrofuturist vision that embodies a hopeful version of an African American future–presents an imagined collection of found and original objects, furnishings and artifacts. In the gallery, Wilson exhibits her ongoing series, P.S. I Love You, in an interactive sound environment constructed from the recorded narratives of former enslaved people archived in the Library of Congress’s “Voices from the Days of Slavery.” Wilson takes early 20th-century postcards that sentimentalize stereotypes of the “happy servant” in the economies of Southern plantation culture and, using collage and mixed media, restores their dignity; at Lynden, they are placed among objects that might have come from Eliza’s imagined world.

We are planning four performances in conjunction with Fo Wilson’s exhibition, Eliza’s Peculiar Cabinet of Curiosities. This second performance features Viktor Le, who will re-imagine the picnic scene from Julie Dash’s seminal film, Daughters of the Dust. Viktor L. Ewing-Givens is a found object-performance based installation artist who gathers ancestral objects in order to activate spaces for site-specific rituals. Through the accumulation of these rich cultural materials, he creates spaces that act as temples: temples of resistance, temples of the temporal, temples of anthropological speculation and temples for the activation of memory in relation to African American cultural/spiritual retentions and continuities. He is currently based in Chicago where he studies Interdisciplinary Arts at Columbia College Chicago.

We are planning four performances in conjunction with Fo Wilson’s exhibition, Eliza’s Peculiar Cabinet of Curiosities. This third performance features Honey Pot Performance, presenting their latest production, Ma(s)king Her. Ma(s)king Her (2016) is a dance theater work addressing the absence of women of color in speculative fiction as empowered future beings and journeywomen. Aligned with AfroSurrealism and black feminist thought, this modern folktale emphasizes the urgency of creating alternative worlds and economies of value and need, particularly for women of color in a world that often subjugates their collective presence to silence and/or invisibility. Honey Pot Performance is a creative Afro-diasporic feminist collaborative committed to documenting and interrogating fringe subjectivities amidst the pressures of contemporary global life.

WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES

YOGA IN THE GARDEN: YOGA PLUS- SLOW LOOKING WITH HEATHER EIDEN
Saturday, August 6, 9-10:30 am (final session)
Fee: $12/$7 members
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/yoga-garden-jul-2016

Yoga, which means union, refers to the interconnection of mind, body and spirit. Yoga is an ongoing process of discovery, an evolving art, and a pathway to holistic health. In this beginning/intermediate Hatha yoga class, Eiden focuses on mindfulness, centering and alignment as she leads students through asanas (physical postures), pranayama (control of the breath), and relaxation. For Yoga Plus, Eiden calls upon her background as a ceramic artist and art educator to teach slow looking, the act of looking deeply at a work of art. Over her years at Lynden, Eiden has come to view steady contemplation of sculpture as a mindfulness practice, both restorative and enlivening. Each class will begin with chai tea, and end in informal discussion.

TAI CHI IN THE GARDEN: TAI CHI PLUS- HARMONIZING WITH NATURE
Sunday, August 7, 9-10:30 am (final session)
Fee: $12/$7 members
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/tai-chi-garden-jul-2016

Angela Laughingheart combines the soft moving sequences of Tai Chi and Qigong with readings from the Chinese classics, bringing mind and body in harmony with nature. Heather Eiden moves from yoga asanas to slow looking–at the sculptures at Lynden–as a technique for mindfulness. No experience is necessary. Handouts for home practice and cool tea are provided. The class fee includes admission to the sculpture garden for the day. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear (yoga socks, tai chi shoes) for outdoor practice and bring a mat for yoga. Classes move indoors in inclement weather.

PRIMITIVE RAKU: A CERAMICS WORKSHOP WITH KATHERYN CORBIN
Saturday, August 20, 2016 – 10 am-4 pm
Fee: $85/$75 members
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/primitive-raku-ceramics-workshop-2016

In the past, Native Americans probably made clay vessels on what are now the grounds of Lynden. In these pre-glaze days, pots were sealed by rubbing river mud into the surfaces, sealing the goodness in the container. We will spend a spring day at Lynden with ceramic artist-in-residence Katheryn Corbin forming vessels using traditional techniques: pinching, coiling, and smoothing. We will use sigellatta, a form of deflocculated clay, instead of river mud, to seal our pots. After bisque firing, Corbin will return to Lynden for a smoke firing. The smoke blackens the pots, leaving them with a subtle, shining finish. (Attendance at smoke firing voluntary.)

LYNDEN LAWN & GARDEN SERIES: SEDGES AND GRASSES FOR LANDSCAPING WITH SHARON MORRISEY
Saturday, August 20, 2016 – 10 am-12 noon
Fee: $15/$10
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/lawn-and-garden-series-sedges-and-grasses-landscaping

Although not as flashy as the broad-leafed flowing forbs, ornamental grasses and sedges have their own special charms. This field session will introduce you to the subtle, but still spectacular, shapes, colors, and textures of many ornamental and native grasses and sedges growing at Lynden. You will learn the unique sun, soil and moisture preferences of each plant so you can decide if and where they might work in your home landscape. Sharon Morrissey has been lending her horticulture knowledge and expertise to Wisconsin’s residents since 1992. As the Consumer Horticulture Agent for Milwaukee County University of Wisconsin-Extension she serves both individual and groups across a broad range of yard and garden related topics. Sharon is frequently featured on local media including a regular guest spot on the Fox6 Wake-Up News show’s Green Thumb Garden.

THE CONSERVATION FRAMING SERIES WITH BRUCE KNACKERT: FLOAT FRAMING
Sunday, August 28, 2016 – 10 am-11:30 am
Fee: $10/$5
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/conservation-framing-series

Bruce Knackert manages Lynden’s indoor collection of paintings, small sculpture and works on paper. In The Conservation Framing Series, he demonstrates framing practices and pitfalls for works on paper to help you speak knowledgeably to framers and preserve your own collection. This session focuses on float framing, presentations used when the artwork has a deckled or uneven edge, or when the entire image is critical and it is important that nothing is covered. It is also used on artwork that is dimensional or doesn’t lie flat, which then requires the use of a spacer to separate it from the glazing. For the past 30 years, Bruce Knackert has worked at a number of university art galleries, art museums, a natural history museum and a private art gallery. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a Master of Arts degree in painting and drawing from Ball State University where he held an assistantship in the registration and preparation departments.
