Garden District Perennial and Seed Exchange a money saver

“If you saw a five, 10 or 20-dollar bill lying on the ground, you’d pick it up,” Alderman Terry L. Witkowski said. “The free perennials sitting on the ground at the Garden District Perennial and Seed Exchange cost that much at a store, and they’re free for the taking, offering you the opportunity to save money on your plants.”
Alderman Witkowski invites residents to the Garden District Neighborhood Association’s free Perennial and Seed Exchange this Saturday, May 14, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Garden District Farmer’s Market grounds at the corner of S. 6th Street and W. Norwich Street.
In the 10 years since it began, the Perennial and Seed Exchange has become a staple event for green-thumbs in the Garden District. The event is essentially a free swap meet for local gardeners to trade with their neighbors and share gardening tips.
Alderman Witkowski said the event is an excellent opportunity to do something productive with perennials that need to be thinned out or plants that don’t fit in a new flower scheme. Residents bring their plants, lay them out and take home a new variety at no cost. Harvested seeds may also be shared with others. Any extra plants that are not claimed by the end of the event will be used to beautify parts of the Garden District.
