ON VIEW IN THE HOUSE

Through February 28, 2016
SCOTT WOLNIAK: LANDSCAPE RECORD
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/scott-wolniak-landscape-record

Scott Wolniak deploys rigorous, transformative processes to complicate relationships between found and made, slow and fast, appearing and disappearing, surface and interior. His latest carved plaster tablets and graphite drawings arrive at similar aesthetic states but from opposite directions: the painted tablets respond to surface texture and chance operations, excavating compositions through deconstructive sgraffito techniques, while the drawings depart from landscape imagery and are built up into complex, almost-recognizable images created through a process of repetitive mark-making, erasure, and re-drawing. For Wolniak, there is a meditative effect in repetitive action, and the accumulation of intricate, layered marks yield phenomenological fields: “Millions of small gestures add up to create spatial energy that is not necessarily about my hand.”

WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES

HOLIDAY GIFTMAKING WORKSHOPS
Lynden is offering a series of holiday giftmaking workshops between November 22 and December 12. They range from simple activities suitable for families with smaller children to more advanced workshops for adults. To enhance the celebratory spirit, we will have light refreshments available for participants. Whether you are making a gift for yourself or another, these workshops should provide a cheerful atmosphere for art making as we head into winter. To see a complete list of holiday giftmaking workshops, visit: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/education/workshops

More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/holiday-giftmaking-workshop-tapestry-weaving

Saturday, December 5, 2015 – 1-2:30 pm
Fee: $6/$5 members (one bag per registrant)
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/holiday-giftmaking-workshop-leaf-print-gift-bags-naomi-cobb

Drop in and decorate a cloth gift bag using a leaf printing process in this all ages workshop. These home made bags can be used instead of gift wrapping paper for smaller items, or make a large bag as an attractive way to package your tree blocks (see November 22) or other puzzle toys.

HOLIDAY GIFTMAKING WORKSHOP: SILK SCARF PAINTING
A Workshop with Leslie Perrino
December 6, 10 am-4:30 pm
Fee: $80/$75 members (all materials included)
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/holiday-giftmaking-workshop-silk-scarf-painting

This daylong workshop will explore easy and artful ways to apply dye to pre-hemmed silk scarves. From simple techniques such as tie-dyeing, resist and salt, to interesting ways to make marks, we’ll let ourselves be inspired by the wonderful art and nature surrounding us at Lynden.

Each student will create three wearable and uniquely painted scarves using this centuries-old painting form. We will also make some hand painted silk ribbon to use if you would like to make a gift of one of your scarves. No experience required, and all materials supplied. Remember: using dyes can be messy. We’ll supply you with an apron, but please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stained.

FAMILY HOLIDAY WORKSHOP: MARSHMALLOWS, TOOTHPICKS & BUCKMINSTER FULLER
A Workshop with Aparna Datey
Sunday, December 6, 2015 – 12:30-2:30 pm
Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/family-holiday-workshop-marshmallows-toothpicks-buckminster-fuller-aparna-datey

Buckminster Fuller was an innovative architect who wanted to create sustainable design solutions for global problems from housing and transportation to education and poverty. His artifact–the geodesic dome–was constructed with short struts (like toothpicks) to form an open framework of triangles or polygons. In this workshop we will use marshmallows and toothpicks to learn about 3D shapes and forces as we build our own artifacts–and we’ll save a few marshmallows to drop in our hot chocolate! Aparna Datey is an architect and educator.

HOLIDAY GIFTMAKING WORKSHOP: GARLIC BASKET
Saturday, December 12, 12:30pm-4:30pm
Fee: $20/$16 members (all materials included)
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/holiday-giftmaking-workshop-garlic-basket-2015

Lynden’s Jeremy Stepien guides you through the process of making a garlic basket–perfect for your own home or as a gift. Learn a traditional twining weave using a combination of willow from the sculpture garden and basket-weaving reed. We’ll use raffia to add color and texture to the basic weave. No prior weaving experience required.

FAMILY HOLIDAY WORKSHOP: TERRARIUM PENDANTS
Sunday, December 13, 2015 – 12:30-2:30 pm
Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/education/family-holiday-workshop-terrarium-pendants

Give the gift of the sculpture garden–or at least a tiny bit of it. Holiday season is upon us and we will be making terrariums—miniature environments—that can be worn on a string, ribbon or chain. Choose among small glass bottles and vials and an assortment of natural materials to create your own unique, hand-made gift. Select dried materials that require no attention or construct a living pendant that will grow with your care. At 2 pm we’ll learn to fold an origami box to wrap the gift. Package your pendant with a Lynden membership for a gift that lasts all year long.

grow WORKSHOP WITH YEVGENIYA KAGANOVICH
Sunday, December 20, 2015 – 1-5 pm
Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/grow-2015

Yevgeniya Kaganovich and her student assistants take up residence in the studio to make the next “planting” of grow, Kaganovich’s durational installation. Drop in to watch or participate as Kaganovich fuses the layers of plastic to create a surface similar to leather or skin, molds the skin into plant-like volumes, stuffs the volumes with more bags, and connects the forms with plastic bag “thread.” Tasks include cutting sheets and strips; fusing sheets and tubes; sewing bulb forms and connecting them to bases; crocheting tubes and necks; stuffing stalks; and assembling the plants.

FOR KIDS: PROGRAMS FOR THE VERY YOUNG, WEEKLY ART DROP-IN

WEEKLY ART DROP-IN FOR KIDS AGED 6-12
December 2, 9, 16
Wednesdays, 2:30-5 pm
Fee: $10/$8 members; Art Drop-In Card: Any 8 sessions for $56/$40 members
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/weekly-art-drop-in-2015

Drop into our studio for informal art exploration. Come for 30 minutes or stay for 2 1/2 hours; visit weekly or stop by when you need an after-school activity; bring a friend or sibling or try it on your own. Each week we’ll introduce different materials, processes and themes, and get you started on a project. We’ll focus on three-dimensional artmaking–though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging–and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland.

TUESDAYS IN THE GARDEN: AN OUTING FOR PARENTS & VERY SMALL CHILDREN
Fee: $10/$8 members (includes admission to the sculpture garden for one adult and one child aged 3 or under; additional children $4 each).
Tuesday, December 15 – 10:30-11:30 am
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/tuesdays-in-the-garden

The 40 acres that house the Lynden collection of monumental outdoor sculpture are also home to many birds, insects, frogs, mammals and plants. Naturalist Naomi Cobb offers a nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons, and provides an opportunity for those with very small children to engage in outdoor play and manipulation of art materials.

COMING UP IN JANUARY

Look forward to a new year of workshops, exhibitions, and programs for young and old: Tuesdays in the Garden, Story Time in the Garden, weekly Art Drop-In, a Homeschool Day (Jan. 21), a School’s Out Workshop (Jan. 25), and a Dog Day (Jan. 16). Light Up the Garden, our annual lantern-making workshop followed by a candle-lit walk, is scheduled for Jan. 17. The Women’s Speaker Series welcomes Jennifer Robson, author of Moonlight Over Paris, on Jan. 21. There will be a Candle Mold Workshop on Jan. 30, and artist Scott Wolniak returns the same day to lead an outdoor tour and screen some of his videos.
