The Nutcracker Brings Beauty and Joy to Milwaukee

The world’s most famous ballet scenes take center stage in this holiday classic

By - Nov 20th, 2015 04:20 pm

Milwaukee’s magical holiday tradition returns to fill hearts with festive spirit and memories that last a lifetime.Milwaukee Ballet will once again ring in the holiday season with The Nutcracker, showing Dec. 12-27 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Voted Milwaukee’s favorite holiday tradition by M Magazine readers, Michael Pink’s magical interpretation is widely praised for its lavish set, gorgeous costumes, and breathtaking choreography that would rival anything on Broadway.

Featuring more than 200 dancers from Milwaukee Ballet’s Company and School & Academy, 145 costumes, special effects, and an impressive number of stagehands and volunteers behind the scenes, The Nutcracker is the city’s biggest holiday spectacle. The beauty on stage is enhanced by Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, who will play Tchaikovsky’s iconic score in its entirety with a special appearance by the young artists of Milwaukee Children’s Choir.

“Audiences are always blown away by the sheer spectacle of The Nutcracker. Yet at its heart, it’s a heartwarming story about all the magic and mayhem that can happen when families get together for the holidays,” says Artistic Director Michael Pink. “I think that’s why so many people return year after year. They want to come together and fondly remember the last time they saw it, or come back to make new memories. For many, it’s simply not the holidays unless they see The Nutcracker.”

Pink purposefully choreographed the classic with plenty of action that would keep the audience enchanted whether they were seeing The Nutcracker for the first time, or the 101st. He also encourages each dancer to give their own unique spin on their role. With four different casts that change every performance, the audience sees a new show every time they attend.
