WEST BEND, WI) The 11th annual Wisconsin Visual Art Lifetime Achievement Awards (WVALAA) ceremony will be held at the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) at 205 Veterans Avenue in West Bend on Friday, May 16 at 5:30 pm. Founded in 2004 as a collaboration between MOWA, Wisconsin Visual Artists, and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, the WVALAA is the in-state “Hall of Fame” for individuals, groups, and organizations who have supported the visual arts with distinction.

Recipients of this year’s WVALAA are: Edward S. Curtis (photographer), Martha Glowacki (artist, curator, and administrator), Audrey Handler (glass artist), David V. Holmes (sculptor), Mark Mulhern (painter), Della Wells (mixed media artist, curator), and Ruth West (patron).

This year’s guest speaker is Carl Corey, who will give a presentation entitled “A Sense of Place.” Throughout his career, Corey has taken thousands of seemingly simple pictures of places and people, not just in Wisconsin, but across the United States. “A Sense of Place” incorporates environmental portraits including many from his latest published body of work, For Love and Money. Corey’s insightful and perceptive eye captures aspects of America that defy stereotypes and iconography in favor of the individual and human. Photographs from For Love and Money, which focuses on Wisconsin businesses that have been in single family ownership for more than 50 years, are currently on view at MOWA through July 27, 2014.

Support for Wisconsin Visual Art Lifetime Achievement Awards is provided by MOWA, three chapters of the Wisconsin Visual Artists, AC Art Association, and the League of Milwaukee Artists, together with support from the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, and individual donors.
