DAN TOROP: FROZEN PERIOD
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/dan-torop-frozen-period
In a series of extended residencies at the Lynden Sculpture Garden beginning in the summer of 2013, Dan Torop made photographs on the grounds which integrate an historical text–Meriwether Lewis’s June 14, 1805 diary entry describing a day and night in the environs of the Great Falls of the Missouri River–with present day visual explorations. Mindful of ecologist Aldo Leopold’s description of a nearby landscape, Torop responded to the passage of seasons, animals, and objects across the site, sometimes intervening, always observing. Frozen Period refers to both a season–the frigid winter of 2014–and an historical epoch: the “frozen period,” the time between the death of the sculpture garden’s owner and creator, Peg Bradley, in 1978, and its opening to the public in 2010. Frozen Period is both a subjective description based upon a year’s photographic work, and an examination of the very act of exploration and observation. Through rendering and modifying Lynden’s spaces, Torop examines the tension between exploration and domestication, expansion and settlement, the “sublimely grand” and the “pleasingly beautifull” (Lewis, June 14, 1805). The opening of the exhibition coincides with the 210th anniversary of Meriwether Lewis’s narrative.

ARTIST-LED TOUR OF LYNDEN WITH EDDEE DANIEL

More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/artist-led-tour-lynden-eddee-daniel
Artist-in-residence Eddee Daniel is a fine art photographer and writer who specializes in urban ecologies. His year-long residency, Art and Nature: Attitudes and Edges, combines his interests in art and the environment, and has brought him to Lynden for extended periods to explore and photograph. Daniel will begin his artist-led tour with a brief slide presentation of work done to date, followed by a personalized tour of the grounds. Daniel brings to his current full time practice over 30 years of experience teaching art, architecture and photography. His tour of the sculpture garden will highlight a few of his favorite sculptures and also explore the more naturalized areas behind and around the formal garden. Come early to picnic on the grounds, then share Daniel’s discoveries at the intersection of art and nature.
REGGIE WILSON/FIST AND HEEL PERFORMANCE GROUP: MOSES(ES)
Saturday, July 18, 2015 – 2 pm
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/Moseses
Milwaukee-born choreographer Reggie Wilson comes home to create a new site-specific iteration of his acclaimed work Moses(es). Originally inspired by Zora Neale Hurston’s Moses, Man of the Mountain (the Moses story told as a Southern folk tale in African-American vernacular), and by his travels to holy lands such as Israel, Egypt, Turkey and Mali, Moses(es) examines the effects that migration has on beliefs and on how we choose to lead and why we follow. During his two-week residency, Wilson will make use of Lynden’s landscape and sculpture to construct distinctive settings for each part of the work, and will engage with an intergenerational group of community performers to create a unique Moses(es) that is a celebration of space and place. This is a co-presentation with Alverno Presents, and part of the Movement and Migration project: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/movement-and-migration

OPENING RECEPTION: SUMMER INSTITUTE EXHIBITION
Friday, July 31, 2015 – 5-6 pm
Free
The K-12 teachers participating in our annual Summer Institute open an exhibition of the projects completed, indoors and out, during this summer’s intensive, Movement and Migration. The Institute, a collaboration between the Lynden Sculpture Garden and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Art Education program, recruits cross-disciplinary teams of K-12 teachers from selected schools to participate in hands-on experiences and artistic dialogues with curators, artists, naturalists, and UWM faculty with the aim of developing curriculum that uses their discoveries at Lynden to teach through the arts. The Institute is a component of ArtsECO, a UWM initiative funded by the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation that focuses on sustaining arts education by building a strong network of support for pre-service, early service, and veteran teachers equipped to “teach through the arts.” The exhibition remains on view through August 9.

In the warmer seasons, we offer a monthly docent-led “patio tour” for those with limited mobility. Mrs. Bradley, who collected the more than 50 monumental sculptures at Lynden between 1962 and 1978, liked to be able to see a great deal of the sculpture from her seat in the corner of the porch, so the patio offers an excellent view of much of our collection. The 45-60 minute tour, conducted from the patio of the house, introduces visitors to the history of the Lynden Sculpture Garden, surveys the sculptures visible from the patio, and takes a closer look at those nearby.
MIDSUMMER SATURNALIA: AN EVENING TO ENJOY THE PLANETS
Wednesday, July 22, 2015 – 6-10:30 pm
Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/midsummer-saturnalia-2015
The Lynden Sculpture Garden remains open until 7:30 pm on Wednesdays during the summer months. It’s a beautiful time to see the garden, to enjoy a picnic on the grounds, and to take a stroll. We would like more people to enjoy these evenings at Lynden, so on July 22 we’re hosting our second annual Midsummer Saturnalia, which includes some inducements: an astronomy talk, planet gazing, plus some treats (Transit of Venus cookies anyone?)–to lure you out on a Wednesday night. We’ll be looking at our Moon, Saturn, the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, and the Ring Nebula in Lyra. Bring your picnics, your ears, and your eyeballs. Picnicking from 6-8 pm; an Introduction to the Night Sky with amateur astronomer Robert Powell from 8-9 pm; planet-gazing thereafter (and don’t worry if you don’t have a telescope, Rob will provide a 11″ Schmidt-Cassegrain or 13″ Newtonian telescope).

The theme for July is abuzz.

Each camp concludes with an informal showing for family and friends. Join us for a summer of art and nature!
