URBAN WOOD ENCOUNTER
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/urban-wood-encounter

The landscape at Lynden is dotted with more than 600 trees. There were, at one time, many more: the majority of the elms on the grounds were lost to Dutch elm disease. Now, with the emerald ash borer making its way into southeastern Wisconsin, we think a lot about how to turn our ash trees into a sustainable resource. These trees have shown up in everything from the temporary art installations on the grounds to the lintels in our parking lot. Urban Wood Encounter, now in its fourth year, is designed to introduce the public to the environmental value of urban wood within the context of an exhibition of fine furniture. Urban wood comes from the trees that line our streets, shade our homes, and define our parks–trees that are not harvested for their timber value but instead often find their way into landfills when they succumb to age, injury or disease. According to the US Forest Service, the wood “waste” generated in this country’s urban areas, if processed, could produce approximately 3.8 billion board feet of lumber annually. In an effort to advance the sustainable recovery and the best use of the products of urban forests, Urban Wood Encounter challenges furniture makers and designers to create inspiring, thoughtful, and beautiful furniture from this regionally abundant and underutilized natural resource.

WOMEN’S SPEAKER SERIES: MARGARET HAWKINS, AUTHOR OF LYDIA’S PARTY
Wednesday, January 28, 2015 – 7-9 pm
Fee: $22/$18 members – includes an autographed copy of Lydia’s Party and refreshments.
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/MargaretHawkins

Each year, Lydia hosts a party for a group of six women friends who have come to value the annual midwinter fête as a cherished ritual in their lives. Over a laden table, the women share newsy updates, simmering secrets, and raucous laughter. Twenty years ago, these friends bonded over their budding careers, their love of art and food, their romances, their dogs, and now they think they know all there is to know about one another. On this particular evening, however, Lydia prepares to make a shattering announcement. As we follow these women through their party preparations, we meet an unforgettable cast of characters, each of whom is navigating their everyday chores while also meditating in stolen moments on their greatest regrets, their complicated relationships, and their deepest desires. Having reached middle age, all are pondering the states of their lives, wondering “what’s next?” But when Lydia delivers her news, she shocks them all, and they rediscover the enduring bonds of friendship. This exquisitely written novel delivers a funny and tender portrait of friendship, love, aging, romance, grief, and unexpected happiness. The 2015 Women’s Speaker Series is a program of the Lynden Sculpture Garden and Milwaukee Reads in partnership with Boswell Book Company. It is sponsored by Bronze Optical, with treats from MKELocalicious.

WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES

PROJECT FEEDERWATCH ORIENTATIONS
January 7, 2015, 12-4 pm
January 8, 2015, 10 am-4 pm
January 18, 2015, 1-4 pm
January 19, 2015, 10 am-4 pm
Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden; advance registration required.
More information: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/feederwatch

Lynden is a registered site for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeederWatch. The main goal of this citizen science project is to combine the interests of backyard bird watchers with the needs of ornithologists who study bird populations. By making simple, standardized counts of the birds in their yards (or, in this case, at Lynden) and reporting them to the FeederWatch database, FeederWatchers contribute directly to the scientific understanding of bird populations. These observations help scientists study changes in the distribution and abundance of feeder birds over time. We’ve established a new bird feeder on the grounds, using the recommended seeds to attract birds through the seasons. We have binoculars and color charts to help us identify the birds at our feeder. Now, we need bird viewers of all ages and experience levels to join us on our siting days to help tally our observations for the project. We have designated two consecutive days each month from November through April for orientations. Once you’ve received this training, you can sign up for your own birdwatching slot.

CERAMIC HANDBUILDING: TRAYS, TILES AND TRIVETS
A WORKSHOP WITH LINDA WERVEY VITAMVAS
Monday, January 19, 2014 – 10 am-4 pm
Fee: $85/$75 members (all materials included). Registration is limited!
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/ceramic-handbuilding-trays-tiles-and-trivets-jan-2015

Working in clay is deeply satisfying, and making pottery allows one to explore aesthetics and function simultaneously. In Trays, Tiles, and Trivets we will work with porcelain slabs. The focus will be on different surface decoration techniques such as stencils, image transfer, various carving methods, and adding underglazes for color. With changes in scale and minor additions our flat designs will magically turn into functional trays, tiles and trivets. Bring textures and objects to press into the clay as well as images and designs that you would like to see take form on your pieces. They will then be fired and finished with a clear glaze to protect the surface and make them functional.

URBAN WOOD ENCOUNTERS: FROM TREE TO TABLE
Saturday, January 24, 2015
1-2 pm: Tree Walk on the Lynden Grounds
Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.
2-3:15 pm: Make Your Own Four-Legged Foot Stool with Joseph La Macchia
Fee: $30/$25 members (includes all materials to make one stool; no charge for additional helpers). Advance registration required.
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/urban-wood-encounters-tree-table

What happens to the trees that line our streets, shade our homes, and define our parks when they succumb to age, injury or disease? They are seldom harvested for their timber value but instead often find their way into landfills. In conjunction with our current exhibition, Urban Wood Encounter, we will spend an afternoon tracing the steps from tree to table (or, in this case, foot stool), demonstrating how we can transform this overlooked resource and divert it from local waste streams. We will begin with a tour of the trees at Lynden–representatives of this major urban resource–and the exhibition. Urban wood advocate and exhibition organizer Dwayne Sperber will guide us through the process of locating, harvesting and transforming urban wood into a valuable resource. Artist Joseph La Macchia, whose work is in the exhibition, will lead a woodworking workshop in the afternoon. Working solo, with a friend, or with your kids, make a simple four-legged foot stool from local urban ash wood.

ENAMELING: A WORKSHOP WITH LESLIE PERRINO
Sunday, January 25, 2015 – 9:30 am-4:30 pm
Fee: $110/$99 members (all materials included). Registration is limited!
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/enameling-workshop-leslie-perrino-jan-2015

Enameling is a timeless art form that involves sifting colored glass onto a copper base and fusing it in a kiln to create shiny, colorful works of art. In this workshop, Leslie Perrino teaches the basics of enameling, covering a variety of techniques including stencils, sgraffito, threads, silver foil, screens, and decals. You will complete sample pieces for practice, and can then choose from a variety of projects ranging from wearable items to small bowls. No experience required, and all materials supplied.

CANDLE MOLD MAKING WITH JEREMY STEPIEN

Fee: $20/$16 members (all materials included)
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/candle-mold-making-jan-2015

Cure your cabin fever by designing a candle mold that can be used to transform candle stubs and wax drippings into an attractive new candle. Using simple slab-building techniques, we will design a low-relief pillar candle in clay, make plaster candle molds from these forms, and cast new candles using recycled wax. Take home a candle of your own design and a mold that can be reused to recycle spent candles. No previous experience needed. We’ll supply you with an apron, but please wear clothes suitable for art making.

Come for 30 minutes or stay for 2 1/2 hours; visit weekly or stop by when you need an after-school activity; bring a friend or sibling or try it on your own. Each week we’ll introduce different materials, processes and themes, and get you started on a project. We’ll focus on three-dimensional artmaking–though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging–and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Watch for occasional outdoor artmaking days, too.

The theme for January is winter surprises.

The 40 acres that house the Lynden collection of monumental outdoor sculpture are also home to many birds, insects, frogs, mammals and plants. Naturalist Naomi Cobb has developed a parent/child nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons. Wednesdays in the Garden focuses on 4 and 5 year olds and their caregivers, and offers a guided, hands-on, all-senses-engaged exploration of the natural world at Lynden. These outings will include stories and art projects. Consider dropping in for a picnic lunch before the program begins. The theme for January is winter surprises.

HOMESCHOOL DAY: SHADOW & SPACE
Thursday, January 22, 2015 – 9:30 am-2:30 pm
Fee: $40/$30 members.
Ages: 6-15
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/homeschool-day-treasures

The dark season is upon us, the perfect time to explore nature by looking at the negative spaces–the spaces between things–and the role of shadows in our observations. On the land, we will investigate how plant and animal life (including humans) accommodate to the absence of light and warmth; in the studio, we’ll discover how silhouettes, shadows and negative space are used to create sculpture.

SCHOOL’S OUT WORKSHOP: MYSTERIES OF WINTER
Monday, January 26, 2015 – 9 am-4 pm (late pickup available)
Ages: 6-11
Fee: $60 / $52 members
More information and to register: http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/content/schools-out

Winter can appear to be a silent, frozen time–a call for hibernation and long naps. However, there are creatures out every day finding food, and quiet processes continue in the plants and ponds. We will track the mysteries of life in winter, using snow and ice as aids. Warming up in the studio, we’ll use animal tracks in the snow at Lynden as inspiration for creating wintery diorama sculptures that tell stories of life in winter.

COMING UP IN FEBRUARY

Watch for our Winter Carnival (February 7), as well as several workshops: Get to Know Your GoPro (February 15); silk scarf painting with Leslie Perrino (February 21); ceramics with Linda Wervey Vitamvas (February 23); and Shibori with Natural Dyes with Jamie Bertsch (February 28).
