Choreographers Monica Rodero and Daniel Schuchart present Duetted and Connected, November 22-23, 2014 at Danceworks Studio Theatre. Duetted is an evening of duets featuring works by Rodero and Schuchart, and guest choreographers Susan Marshall of NYC, Suniti Dernovsek of Portland, OR, and Debra Loewen of Wild Space Dance Company, Milwaukee, WI. Connected is a new solo dance project by Schuchart. Both concerts were presented and well received at the Minnesota Fringe Festival in August 2014.

Rodero and Schuchart are both pretty laid back, have a great sense of humor, and only argue about choreography. Their first independent concert was in the summer of 2004, which makes it easy to remember when they had their first fight. After a few years in sunny California to earn MFA degrees in Experimental Choreography (i.e. how to fight for real) the pair has returned to Milwaukee to celebrate ten years of making innovative, physical, and humorous work together. Danceworks was the venue of their first collaborative concert and the duo is excited to return to the studio theatre to mark their “anniversary.”

Duetted showcases new works and some greatest hits by the dynamic duo, and to help reduce the bickering the evening features choreography by other artists that have been creatively and professionally influential to the inventive and unpredictable pair. Long time friend, mentor, and collaborator, Debra Loewen, stages Some Years After, an intensely heated duet about love, life, choice, and regret, and Suniti Dernovsek resets the tense duet This Is How We Disappear on the pair. Then they let out some hot air in Susan Marshall’s Sound, the gorgeous and audibly captivating duet from the 2006 evening-length concert Cloudless.

Connected is a new solo project by Schuchart that distorts the traditional audience-performer boundaries as the dance emerges and dissolves with the help of those in attendance. Using text, movement, improvised structures, and interactive tasks, Connected investigates how community is both created and creative as the audience is engaged to both complete and engulf the performance. Schuchart leads a spiraling ride into the act of making that is joyful, raucous, and emotionally charged. (Limited seating, 25 per performance.)
