MILWAUKEE –– Menomonee Valley Partners, Inc. and Zimmerman Architectural Studios announce the launch of a newly created Menomonee Valley Artist in Residency Pilot Program for 2014. The residency will focus attention on interconnections between culture, community and ecology in the Valley. As the inaugural Artist in Residence, photographer Eddee Daniel brings to the role a vision of the Menomonee Valley as a dynamic and vital part of the fabric of Milwaukee, where economic and community development is integrated with parks and natural areas. Daniel will be working out of the offices of Zimmerman Architectural Studios. The residency opens to the public on gallery night, January 17, when a display of Daniel’s work will be exhibited at Zimmerman, 2122 W. Mount Vernon Ave., Milwaukee, WI.

Menomonee Valley Partners, Inc., a non-profit organization, has been a leader in the Valley revitalization efforts since 1999. Zimmerman Architectural Studios is one of the oldest and most successful architectural firms in Wisconsin. Together they are piloting the residency program throughout 2014 to emphasize the role of the arts in envisioning Valley redevelopment and to stimulate an exchange of ideas about the Menomonee Valley, its geography, culture, history and future. Once the industrial as well as geographical center of Milwaukee and later a victim of post-industrial decay, the Valley has seen a dramatic turnaround in the past 15 years. There are new businesses, new and expanding recreational opportunities, and a cleaner, healthier river and environment. The Valley’s redevelopment includes the Hank Aaron State Trail and the new Three Bridges Park, which opened in 2013 as Milwaukee’s newest park and natural area.

Eddee Daniel is a fine art photographer and writer with well-established ties to the Menomonee Valley. He is the author of Urban Wilderness: Exploring a Metropolitan Watershed (2008, Center for American Places), a book that examines the Menomonee River in photography and prose. His photography has twice won awards in the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network’s Menomonee Valley plein air event, Beyond the Canvas. As Artist in Resident, Daniel will be available by appointment throughout 2014. Contact information: 414-771-8857 or 262-385-3755 (cell) or eddee@eddeedaniel.com.
