St. Patrick’s Day 2010 is fast approaching. Not set on plans? No sweat. TCD has a quick guide to culture, food, music and dance to make everyone feel a little more Irish.
Saturday, March 13:
Milwaukee’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the largest in Wisconsin, and the 44th Annual Shamrock Parade will take place downtown at Noon. The parade route starts at 3rd and Wisconsin in front of the Grand Avenue Mall.
Live Music will be featured Parade Day at Mo’s Irish Pub, Harp Irish Pub, and Trinity Three Irish Pub downtown beginning at 9 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. The performances at Mo’s include Tristan Blue, Ryan McIntyre, Mike Bustin, Phil Norby and Scott Meissner. Check the site for the schedule.
More performances take place at The Post Parade Party from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center. The Northern Ireland band, Different Drums of Ireland will headline. Other acts include Blarney, Dublin O’Shea, Glencastle Irish Dancers, Rince Nia Academy of Dance, Kinsella Irish Dance School, Ian Gould, Athas, the Caledonian Dancers, Myserk, Eileen O’Rourke: Leprechaun Stories and others.
Sunday March 14:
Check out Irish Family Day at the Domes for music, food, and culture and crafts from noon to 5 p.m. Watch Irish dancers perform and learn from them about Irish dance.
Wednesday March 17:
Gaelic Storm performs at the Pabst. Gaelic Storm combines Celtic rhythms and influence with rock and roll. They’ve headlined Milwaukee’s Irish Fest several years and appeared in the 1997 feature film, Titanic. The show begins at 8 p.m. Click here for ticket info or to sample their music.
Mo’s Irish Pub starts the live music at 7 a.m. The Orphans headline at 7:30 p.m. Check their site for other acts and times.
The Harp Irish Pub and Trinity Three Irish Pub feature Derek Byrne, McMenamin Dancers, Trinity Irish Dancers, Another Pint and Element 13.
Milwaukee’s own John McGivern and Friends at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center. McGivern is an award-winning writer and actor and has appeared in numerous theater shows. He may be best-known for his role in the long running comedy Sheer Madness, which he has brought to a number of cities around the country. In Milwaukee, he is a regular guest on the Dave & Carole morning show on WKLH-FM. To order tickets by phone call the ICHC Box Office at (414) 345-8800, or on the website. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each in advance, $22 at the door.
The Yellow Bittern: The life and times of Liam Clancy, will show at the Irish Fest Center at Noon and 4 p.m. The Yellow Bittern is a new feature documentary from Alan Gilsenan. It’s a portrait of Liam Clancy, the last surviving member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, the man that Bob Dylan called “the best ballad singer I’d ever heard in my whole life.” Parts of the movie were filmed during Clancy’s performances at Milwaukee Irish Fest’s Celtic Roots stage.
