Haunted Halloween Returns to Downer Avenue with Free Family-Friendly Fun

Milwaukee, WI (September, 2026) – The Historic Downer Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) will welcome families, neighbors and visitors to its annual Haunted Halloween on Downer Avenue on Saturday, October 17, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The free, family-friendly celebration will feature trick-or-treating, a pumpkin carving contest, festive activities, discounts and plenty of Halloween spirit along Downer Avenue.
Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in costume and explore the neighborhood while enjoying activities hosted by more than 16 participating Downer Avenue businesses. Highlights include face painting and balloon creations outside Nehring’s Sendik’s, free chocolate chip cookies from Breadsmith, and a spooky story time at Boswell Books beginning at 2:00 p.m.
The community is also invited to participate in the event’s pumpkin carving contest. Guests can admire the creative displays throughout the neighborhood and cast their vote for their favorite pumpkin by dropping a ballot into the cauldron outside Sendik’s. Voters will have the opportunity to win a gift card from participating local merchants.
Haunted Halloween on Downer Avenue is a celebration for the whole family, including furry family members. Well-behaved dogs are welcome and encouraged to join the festivities in costume, adding to the fun and making the event a true neighborhood tradition for both two- and four-legged attendees.
“Haunted Halloween is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and enjoy everything Downer Avenue has to offer,” said Janet Henning, executive director of the Downer Avenue BID. “With activities for kids, adults, local businesses and even our four-legged friends, we look forward to making this year’s celebration another memorable neighborhood tradition.”
The Historic Downer Avenue BID encourages families and visitors to make an afternoon of it by coming in costume, exploring the neighborhood, supporting local businesses and enjoying the many Halloween activities taking place along Downer Avenue.
