Malaka Bland and her partner, Jay Ragsdale, know what keeps kids happy: bright colors, new experiences … and donuts.

The pair, who own and operate child care centers around Milwaukee, are set to launch a sweet new business venture: Donut Headz, a specialty doughnut and viral snack shop at 2264 N. Prospect Ave. in the east-side Clock Tower Building.

“We’re into doing things that the kids love, giving them experiences that they might see online,” Bland said, mentioning sugary creations that go viral on TikTok and capture kids’ attention.

Bland and Ragsdale plan to offer scratch-made, regular-variety doughnuts along with “crazy” doughnut specialties such as cobbler and Biscoff. The couple launched their creations at a doughnut day they hosted at their child care facility, “and the kids loved it,” Bland said.

Donut Headz is taking over the space previously occupied by Donut Squad, which opened in 2016 and closed quietly earlier this year.

“We’re not going to change the structure of the building at all; we’re just giving it a little facelift,” Bland said. “We want to make it kid-friendly with LED lights, make it colorful and bright so they can have some fun.”

A grand opening event advertising music, giveaways and samples was scheduled for Oct. 10, but Bland noted that it has been postponed to mid-October, citing finishing touches to the space. “We’re thinking about pushing the grand opening back two Saturdays from the 10th,” Bland said.

In addition to doughnuts, the shop plans to offer fresh fruit refreshers, doughnut milkshakes, coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches.

Pending city approval, the shop plans to operate Sunday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to midnight.
