Mexican Ice Cream and Snack Shop Planned for Walker’s Point
A couple hopes to bring their traditional, homemade Mexican treats southside main street.

One block south of Mitchell Park, where daytime treats enjoyed on a blanket are always a good idea, a new Mexican ice cream and snack shop is taking shape at 2008 W. National Ave.
The shop, La Fuente de los Leones Paleteria, is the dream of Juan Vallecillo Nunez and his wife, Patricia. When they saw the opportunity to take their homemade snacks and desserts out of their kitchen and into a space along the main thoroughfare in Walker’s Point, they took it.
In a conversation translated by his son, Vallecillo Nunez said: “We have wanted to open a shop for a long time, and we are excited to see it grow.”
The proposed menu will offer a variety of fruit popsicles, along with less common flavors as Oreo cookie, walnut and tamarind. Fresh hibiscus, lime and cucumber drinks accompany horchata on the beverage menu. Popular Mexican street foods such as esquites (Mexican-style corn in a cup), Dorilocos and Tostilocos (loaded chips) round out the menu’s snack offerings. A variety of ice cream and sorbet flavors are planned alongside specialties such as chamoyadas (shaved ice prepared with fruit and chamoy), bananas with cream and milkshakes.
The name La Fuente de los Leones (Fountain of the Lions) pays homage to a popular lion-themed fountain in the couple’s hometown in Mexico.
Pending Common Council license approval, the shop’s proposed hours are Sunday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
