Prado Defeats Primary Challenger

State Rep. Priscilla Prado successfully defended her seat in the state Assembly from a primary challenge Tuesday.

Mimi Reza, a Milwaukee Public Schools board member since 2025, challenged Prado in Assembly District 6 on the south side of Milwaukee. Prado won the district with 76% of the vote.

Prado is an accountant and the owner of Midwest Bookkeeping & Tax Solutions. She went into the election Tuesday with an endorsement from the Wisconsin Educators Association Council  Wisconsin Laborers District Council, National Association of Social Workers and a handful of area elected officials, including Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.

“I am incredibly grateful to the voters who placed their trust in me again,” Prado said in a statement after her victory. “It is an honor to represent our community, and I am ready to continue fighting for working families in Madison.”

Prado will face Republican Samuel Guerrero in the general. Guerrero is a student at Marquette University and a part-time supervisor at UPS, according to a LinkedIn profile. He ran unopposed in the primary.

Democrat Rep. Sylvia Ortiz-Velez, a frequent antagonist of Prado, lost her election to primary challenger Ismael Luna for a neighboring southside district.

Prado and Ortiz-Velez were involved in a dispute over a resolution honoring Hispanic Heritage Month that ultimately led to disorderly conduct charges for Ortiz-Velez. It was alleged that Ortiz-Velez threatened to tell the press “negative things” about Prado if she did not rescind the resolution. Ortiz-Velez denies the allegations but pleaded no contest to the charge in March. Prado backed Ortiz-Velez’s primary challenger Luna, even giving his campaign $1,000.
