Perhaps the MPA members should instead lobby for a metropolitan police force in the suburbs where a good many of them now live. The city is tapped out and a more generous offer to them just takes money away for other worthwhile programs that the city needs to keep it a desirable place to live.
I don’t know the details of negotiations and I am all for the cops getting a fair wage. I am puzzled though why the MPA would prefer to subcontract out their work out to the National Guard. Two things occur to me to be reasonable questions for MPA and City leadership: how many MPD officers are in the Guard and might get called up to do what they already do? And what kind of efforts would the MPA undertake with their political allies in the Wisconsin Legislature, who by the way, are in the majority in both the Assembly and State Senate to get more and fairer state funding for the City. The City has been hosed by the legislature for years. Seems like the Guard activation is a political and theatrical stunt and certainly not a long term answer the making the city safer.
